Eliminating Drywall Mold
Mold on drywall is a problem that is more common that you might think. Drywall is one of the most widely used building materials in the world. It is crafted from gypsum plaster that is pressed between thick paper and dried with a kiln. It is what comprises walls and ceilings in most homes and other buildings. The first thing to do is identify whether or not your drywall has a mold problem. If you can smell a musty, mildew-like odor then it is very likely that there is mold.
Moisture is the number one cause of mold, walls can sometimes have moisture due to leaking pipes that you cannot see. You might also find ceiling mold, wood mold or other wall mold due to leaking appliances or areas with a high level of humidity. The most dangerous type of mold is toxic black mold, which can make you very sick. If you suspect this type of mold you should definitely call in the professionals to get rid of the problem. You and your family will need to stay elsewhere while the mold is being treated.
For drywall affected with mold, there is no solution other than to cut out the moldy drywall. If you are doing the job yourself, then you will want to sand and scrub wood studs that have mold on them. The areas around the affected area should be cleaned with an anti-mold solution such as bleach mixed with water, left on for about 15 minutes. After the time has elapsed, rinse the area thoroughly to remove the bleach and any traces of mold left behind. Before you install new drywall, the wet area must be dried completely.
One way to speed the process is by aiming fans at the wet area and using a dehumidifier in the area. As its name implies, a dehumidifier removes moisture from the air. Drywall mold can be a pesky problem, but it is not impossible to get rid of. If you are not the do-it-yourself type then there are professionals who can take care of things for you. You probably won't have to vacate your home if the type of mold is not toxic, even if it is a big enough problem to call in a pro. Hopefully your problem with mold and drywall can be easily taken care of with the simple steps outlined above.
