How to Make Your Home Mold Resistant
Mold is a very common fungi. It is found in nature and performs a very valuable service by helping in the decomposition of dead organic matter. However, it is not helpful when found inside the home. Mold can cause allergic reactions, rashes, lung irritation, and asthma attacks in asthmatics. Therefore, it is important to make your home mold resistant. This is easier than you might think, however if you have an existing problem with mold the first step is to get rid of of it.
Toxic black mold is the most dangerous type of mold. If you have this type of mold in your home, it is wise to leave and allow professional mold removal professionals to get rid of the problem. However with less harmful types of mold you may be able to take care of the problem yourself. The first step in making your home resistant to mold is to get rid of any mold infestation that is already there. This can be done with a little hard work and the right supplies. You will need to protect yourself with safety gear like gloves, goggles and a face mask because many of the mold removal cleansers give off fumes. Also make sure to ventilate the area.
For stubborn mold, try scraping it with an old spatula or painters knife. Dispose of the mold and all the sponges and brushes used to clean it with in a trashbag taken outside. Then make sure the cleaned area has been rinsed clean. The final step in cleaning moldy areas is to dry the area with towels, fans, heaters or even a dehumidifier. Dehumidifiers help remove moisture from the air, and as we know moisture is the leading cause of mold spore development.
To prevent the mold from reoccurring, you can make your home mold resistant by keeping all the rooms dry. Avoid keeping too many houseplants, as they can contribute to mold. When you take a bath or shower, dry all bathroom surfaces after you are finished. And, perform a regular mold inspection in areas you don't visit often such as the attic, basement or your crawl space. These are common areas that retain moisture where mold can grow. Attacking mold as soon as you spot it is the best way from keeping it from spreading.
