Treating the Problem of Shower Mold
One of the most common locations you will find mold inside your home is the bathroom shower area. Mold is a type of fungi that comes in many varieties. Some mold causes mild irritation while other types, such as toxic black mold, can be life threatening. The good news is that shower mold is rarely the black variety and it is something you can usually take care of yourself. To remove mold bathroom areas must be thoroughly cleaned and dried in a certain way.
There are products on the market made for mold removal that you may want to try. If you cannot find these products in your supermarket or discount department store, try a home improvement store which often has more heavy duty cleaning products. Mold can also usually be removed with a gallon of water, one cup of bleach and a half cup heavy duty detergent, however it depends on the severity of the problem. The bathroom is a prime location for mold growth because it is a moist room. Without moisture, mold spores cannot grow into mold.
If you notice mold in your shower area that is not overwhelming, you should be able to get rid of it on your own. Before you begin, make certain you are wearing old, protective clothes. A mask to protect you from breathing toxic fumes and safety goggles are also necessary. Not to mention rubber gloves, preferably elbow length. Once you have your supplies gathered and are in protective gear you can begin the mold removal process. In some cases mold may need to be scraped away. Once you have cleaned the mold, rinse the area several times to make sure no mold or cleaning residue remains.
Shower mold can be prevented in the future by always drying shower walls, doors and the bathroom floor after bathing or showering. You may want to use a dehumidifier in the room if it stays moist. Make sure your bathroom is not carpeted because this allows moisture to seep under the carpet and mold to form there. Also, if your shower curtain or curtain liner has mold it is better to replace it than to try and clean it. Although bathroom mold is a pesky problem that presents a foul odor, it can be eradicated and prevented with the right steps.
